Golf Course Reviews

'Road Trip: Myrtle Beach' ends after one season

There will not be a second year of the Golf Channel reality-type show "Road Trip: Myrtle Beach" in 2009. The show featured a celebrity cast on a golf trip to the Grand Strand and 12 original episodes aired in 2008. The cast was ESPN announcer and former PGA Tour member Charlie Rymer, musicians Josh Kelley and Mark Bryan, and Duramed Futures Tour member Perry Swenson. Episodes featured the group's experiences at golf courses, restaurants and other Strand attractions.

A superintendent's Christmas list packed with goodies

Christmas is a time for making wishes and golf course superintendents have their own. Here's a look at what might have filled their letters to the North Pole this year:

Alan Blondin on golf: Some strand courses may close amid financial crisis

From 2005 to 2007, more than 20 golf courses on the Grand Strand closed with plans for redevelopment. Now that a declining economy and housing market have quashed that trend, more courses may be closing in the next few years for more distressing reasons.

Monday After the Masters continues record take

The 14th annual Hootie & the Blowfish Monday After the Masters Celebrity Pro-Am played in April at the Barefoot Resort Dye Club continued a six-year streak of setting proceeds records.

Eastport Golf Club reopening

Closed since January '07, course opens Saturday under new name

Don Metzger and his neighbors are going to realize this week something many on the Grand Strand have futilely yearned for in their own neighborhoods: the community golf course is reopening.

Oyster Bay: It's all about the views

The course's setting amidst marsh, lakes, hardwoods and a vast variety of birds and wildlife provides all the beauty required, and contained in the natural charm is a 25-year-old Dan Maples layout that is both fun and challenging.

Shaftesbury Glen (May 2008)

What sets Shaftesbury Glen apart from most other courses on the Grand Strand are elevated greens on all 18 holes.

Sandy course at the beach

Unique layout trademark of Founders Club

PAWLEYS ISLAND | If you're not hitting out of sand at Founders Club at Pawleys Island, you're driving on it. Every hole on Thomas Walker's new 7,007-yard design on the site of the old Sea Gull Golf Club is surrounded by sand, from the tee box through and sometimes around the green.

Sea Trail Plantation - Jones Course (April 2008)

Three of the five courses heralded golf course architect Rees Jones designed on the Grand Strand have been plowed under in favor of redevelopment. One of the two remaining courses is the 6,761-yard Jones Course at Sea Trail Resort, and Jones built enough unique holes to leave a lasting impression.
