''Down South'' Exhibit at Cheryl Newby Gallery

Cheryl Newby Gallery, 11096 Ocean Highway, Suite 4, Pawleys Island, located in the Shops at Oak Lea, will feature the works of four painters and one sculptor in a group exhibition opening Saturday and continuing through June 7 at the gallery in Pawleys Island. ''Down South'' will feature oils and watercolors by Ray Ellis, Joseph Cave, Ellen Buselli and Martha dePoo. Bronze sculpture by Gwen Marcus will also be featured. Hard Rock Park updates hours

Hard Rock Park has changed some hours of operation for the coming week. The park will be open today from 10 a.m.-1 a.m., Saturday from 10 a.m.-10 p.m., Sunday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. The park is closed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Blue Crab Festival

Originally a small waterfront festival designed to showcase the area's restaurants and accommodations, Little River's Blue Crab Festival has swelled to an event that may attract up to 50,000 attendees this year. Now in its 27th year, the festival offers great seafood, entertainment, arts and crafts, children's activities and a chance to get acquainted with the small town charm of Little River.

Doug McAbee sculpture exhibit

Coastal Carolina University, Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery, off U.S. 501, Conway, is hosting the sculpture of S.C. artist Doug McAbee through June 20. An opening reception with the artist will be held today from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m.

Original play reading

Murrells Inlet Community Theatre, 4450 Murrells Inlet Road, Murrells Inlet, will present an original play reading in conjunction with its general meeting today at 7 p.m. A trio of actors will read a one-act work by playwright David Zinman. The meeting and event are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. A nonprofit organization, the Murrells Inlet Community Theatre was founded in 1998 and has presented 31 plays. The annual meeting is designed for newcomers to learn about the group and sign up to audition or volunteer in other capacities. The Museum of Coastal Carolina

The Museum of Coastal Carolina, 21 East Second St., Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., presents a lecture on the history of Ocean Isle Beach today. Dr. Fred David will talk about his new CD, ''The History of Ocean Isle Beach Driving Tour'' and his upcoming book about Ocean Isle's history. The lecture will feature stories about American Indians, explorers, pioneers, pirates, shipwrecks, plane crashes, hurricanes and more. David is a resident of Ocean Isle Beach and is a professor of management at Francis Marion University. On lecture evenings, the museum opens at 6:30 p.m. for self-guided tours. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. and light refreshments will be served. The cost for the lecture is included in regular museum admission.
